Sample International Week Without Violence Activities

April 1, 2001 to April 8, 2001

The lesson plans for this week for many class will involve issues of nonviolence. Speakers from various community agencies will address classes. Also, students will make announcements every day featuring a famous peacemaker such as: Gandhi, MLK, Mother Teresa, etc.

Monday

Everyone receives a white ribbon in 2nd period, and everyone will put a personal message on it about acts of violence that have affected them. Then the ribbons will be tied on our 6-foot tall peace symbol in the foyer. This activity can be done on a bulletin board with dove-shaped or other shapes of papers instead of ribbons

Tuesday

PeaceWorks Club will plant Peace garden. Discuss KLRU tape of Franklin and TuTu, "A Journey Toward Peace". Students will present skits about violence awareness and prevention and conflict resolution to selected classes.

Wednesday

Clothesline Project will be set up in the court yard. This is a project of T-shirts (much like the AIDS quilt) of people affected by violence. Schools may want to develop its own Clothesline project with students making shirts to honor victims of violence whom they have known.

Thursday

Students will be given an honor pledge to sign and place in a container in the office. These pledges will be brought to the Saturday march and placed in a large container with pledges from other schools during the tribute to victims.

Friday

Assembly in gym at 9:30 A.M. Students report to first period at usual time and wait to be called to the gym. All AISD middle and high schools will be invited to UT to attend a nonviolence teach-in conducted by Arun and Sunanda Gandhi. Schools may invite guest speakers for an assembly such as a Holocaust survivor, other victims of violence, former gang members, etc. Students will spell out "P-E-A-C-E" (or U-N-I-T-Y, J-O-Y, H-O-P-E, D-R-E-A-M,etc.) on the football field.

At 7:00 Arun Gandhi will speak for the Austin Community at UT.

Saturday

March In April Toward the Dream - State-wide March and Rally at 9:30 A.M. from the corner of Riverside and South Congress to the south steps of the Capitol. Please come and bring your choir, band, or other performing groups to be part of our program.

Arun Gandhi will speak at an ecumenical service at 7:00 P..M. at First Baptist Church at Trinity and 9th Streets.

These are just some of the activities which have been done in the past and were very successful at focusing students on alternatives to violence. Please feel free to design your own and share them with us so we can share them with others for next year.
